Frosterley Marble Dragon … A Guardian of British Heritage
Ancient ocean life meets the spirit of the dragon … entirely hand-carved by me, this Frosterley Marble Dragon reveals beautiful cream-coloured fossils against a deep, dark background. Their intricate patterns flow across its face, giving this being a character shaped by both nature and my hands.
A stone with a remarkable British heritage
Frosterley Marble comes from Weardale in County Durham, northern England. Despite its name, it is a fossil-rich limestone, prized for the marble-like finish it takes when polished. Its fossil corals preserve traces of marine life from the Carboniferous period, around 325 million years ago.
For centuries, this distinctive stone has been part of England’s architectural heritage. It can be admired in Durham Cathedral, including the magnificent columns of the Chapel of the Nine Altars … a connection between ancient seas, medieval craftsmanship and the art we create today.
The dragon’s presence
With its watchful expression and flowing contours, this dragon invites thoughts of protection, endurance and quiet strength. The fossils add another layer of symbolism … a reminder of continuity, transformation and our place within the long story of the Earth.
A unique dragon sculpture in a stone that carries both natural history and British heritage.
